Polling expert Nate Silver tried to find some dark humor in Donald Trump's repeated calls to expand the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

The statistician and editor-in-chief of ESPN's FiveThirtyEight speculated in a tweet what the electoral map would look like after a nuclear holocaust.

The map showed only Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming -- and their combined 10 electoral votes -- surviving the horrific destruction of nuclear war.

In that apocalyptic scenario, Trump would still win the election, by a narrow 6-4 margin in the Electoral College.

Trump, who has wondered why the U.S. maintains a nuclear arsenal if the doomsday devices are never used, tweeted Thursday that he would like to "greatly strengthen and expand" those capabilities.

He made clear Friday that he would like to renew the "arms race," although his newly appointed White House spokesman quickly tried to walk back those comments as simply a warning to other nations.
