President Joe Biden declared Mississippi a natural disaster area after an EF-4 tornado blazed through Rolling Fork on Friday. Sunday, the state is expected to experience even more tornadoes. In his statement, he said that he's been in close contact with the state's Republican governor and the disaster declaration will help aid in the cleanup and services to the people in the state.
The “city is gone,” said Rolling Fork Mayor Eldridge Walker.
U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson similarly told CNN, “The police department is destroyed. City Hall is destroyed. The county courthouse is damaged. The fire department is devastated. There’s no grocery store that’s operable in the community.”
While tornado season is generally in the spring for the middle part of the country, there have always been storms that spin up in the southeastern United States in late winter and early spring. Since 2000, a larger number of tornadoes have been hitting Mississippi, according to data from The Clarion-Ledger Tornado Archives. Since 2000, there have been at least five years that had over 100 tornadoes in the state. Since 1950, tornadoes in the state have cost $2,959,066,730 in property damage and $96,974,500 in crop damage.
The New York Times reported that among the youngest known victims was 1-year-old Riley Herndon, whose close family lived near Wren for generations. They've been in the city for so long that they named the street after them. Today, they're mourning their baby.
Using a satellite map above the city of Rolling Fork, and comparing that with the photo of the same town after the tornado, the path the tornado took is clearly visible.
After 26 people died in Mississippi and Alabama, a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” struck south of LaGrange, Georgia, on Sunday morning, CNN reported, citing the weather service in Atlanta. The weather service is warning of another outbreak predicted for the rest of Sunday.
"As many as 100 homes were damaged, with 30 to 40 'completely destroyed,'" the report said, citing Troup County Emergency Management Director Zachary Steele.
Bill Newsom, the Sharkey County Board of Supervisors told CNN's Jim Acosta, that the tornado took out their tornado warning system. So, as storms begin on Sunday, there's no way to warn people in the city.

At one point, as the massive storm approached Amory, Mississippi, the meteorologist paused to pray for the town, knowing that it was going to be horrific.
The Twitter account of Ash Pro, a Christian animal rescue activist posted videos of animals in crates being put on planes to take them to safety. She said that they were traumatized but are on their way to a safer place.
One video of the tornado moving through Silver City was posted as the tornado was growing in strength. Silver City is almost three hours southwest of Amory and Wren.

Jan. 6 grand jury witnesses are being asked what 'national security levers' Trump was trying to pull

CBS News revealed a smidgen of news nested in a shocking episode of "Face the Nation," in which Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) blamed Democrats for Donald Trump celebrating Jan. 6 attackers at his Waco, Texas rally over the weekend.
After, however, reporter Robert Costa noted that special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into Donald Trump's role in the Jan. 6 attacks had taken a turn.
"Based on our reporting, the special counsel is tightening his investigation around former President Trump when it comes to January 6, now compelling some of his top aides and allies to testify under oath about their private conversations with Trump," he explained. "That means there's no privilege, no executive privilege they can cite to try to block any kind of testimony on those issues."
This has been a losing battle for a number of officials that attempted to assert executive privilege during the House Select Committee's investigation into the insurrection and the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election. Ultimately, Congress voted to hold a few of those subpoenaed in contempt of Congress and those proceedings are moving forward despite the House changing hands to the GOP.
"We know the special counsel is looking into a possible conspiracy case against Trump and people around him about trying to block the congressional proceedings on January 6," Costa continued. "We're going to potentially hear now from Mark Meadows. Robert O'Brien, the former national security adviser, John Ratcliffe, the former director of national intelligence."
Costa went on to say that witnesses brought to the grand jury are being asked about the kind of "national security levers Trump was asking about in those final days."
Some of the militia members had said over chats that it was important that they riot so that it would give Trump what he needed to declare the Insurrection Act of 1807 or declare martial law. That would then allow him to deploy the military, seize voting machines, and ultimately allow him to stay in office. Trump had toyed with the idea during the summer of 2020 during the protests of the slaying of George Floyd.
Costa also brought up the document theft case, which is also being investigated by the special counsel. He noted that it's extremely rare for a judge to call in a defendant's lawyer to testify. As legal analysts explained this week, it only happens if there is enough evidence that a crime was committed. It means that a judge believes that's exactly what happened.
"Evan Corcoran, Trump's lawyer in this case, [is] now being told to come in, and he did come in for hours on Friday," Costa said. "And he didn't just talk about his broad view. He had to share audio files, notes, details about all of his conversations with Trump about how Trump handled those federal requests about classified documents. Think back to the Mar-a-Lago FBI search last summer. Corcoran was pressed about what was Trump doing at that intense time. And that really gives the prosecutors a prism into what really happened."
Costa later added more details on Twitter about the information he's gathered.
"Sources directly familiar with witnesses and questions tell me it's clear Special Counsel is now 'tightening' the Jan. 6 probe around Trump and his inner circle, with focus on infamous 12-18-20 Oval [Office meeting], and efforts to push national security, DOJ official," he tweeted. "Witnesses have been pressed in recent weeks about [Rudy] Giuliani, [Sidney] Powell and others who sought to use levers of government to stop the certification of the election… and sources directly involved believe a case on conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding could be in works."

'What the hell is Andrew Cuomo doing?': Disgraced ex-governor trashed for Alvin Bragg attack

During an appearance on MSNBC's "The Alex Witt show," Rep Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lashed out at disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) for attacking Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for investigating Donald Trump's payment of hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
Speaking on WABC radio on Friday night, Cuomo not only attacked Bragg, but also New York Attorney General Tish James and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for also pursuing criminal charges against the former president.
According to Cuomo, "I think it’s all politics and that’s what I think the people of this country are saying. It just feeds that anger and that cynicism and the partisanship."
"It’s a coincidence that Bragg goes after Trump and Tish James goes after Trump and Georgia goes after Trump? That’s all a coincidence?" he asked rhetorically. "I think it feeds the cynicism and that’s the cancer in our body politic right now."

That led Bowman to go off.
"What the hell is governor Andrew Cuomo doing right now?" he exclaimed.
"Governor Andrew Cuomo is carrying water for the MAGA Republicans right now," he continued. "Undermining the investigation of D.A. Bragg, going after President Biden on how the president has handled the border even though there's been no change in border policy since the president has taken office."
"See, and when he talks about the cynicism of the American people, Governor Cuomo, he doesn't understand that cynicism has been baked over decades because people like him have been working more for corporate interests than the people of their state in this country."
"So, please go somewhere and sit down and allow D.A. Bragg to do his job," he added.
