‘Completely inept’: CNN pundit says ‘too late’ for Trump to save presidency after bizarre Civil War remarks

A CNN panel agreed on Monday that President Donald Trump needs to learn more about American history after he questioned why the Civil War was fought and suggested that President Andrew Jackson could have prevented the conflict even though Jackson was dead at the time.

During an interview with the Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito over the weekend, Trump opined about his affection for Jackson.

I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn’t have had the Civil War. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart. He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, “There’s no reason for this.” People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War — if you think about it, why? People don’t ask that question, but why was there a Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?

CNN host Poppy Harlow said on Monday that she found it “bizarre” that anyone would question why there was a Civil War.

“As a point of history,” co-host John Berman noted. “When Andrew Jackson was president — and he died 16 years before the Civil War — he dealt with what is called the Nullification Crisis with South Carolina. South Carolina threatened to supersede federal law, there was the idea of secession then and he tamped it down. But it wasn’t about slavery and Andrew Jackson was, of course, a slaveholder.”

CNN contributor Maria Cardona offered Trump a piece of advice: “Mr. Trump, crack a book.”

“He is the president of the United States,” Cardona said. “And when he says ridiculous statements like this, it betrays his complete and total ignorance when it comes to history. But worse than that, John and Poppy, I think it really signifies how uninterested and the disdain that he has for people who really are, not just historians, but experts in public policy and in politics and everything that you need to know to actually learn to govern and to be able to run a country.”

“I think it’s too late,” she added. “Which is why the majority of Americans did not support him. We knew that he had this disdain for knowledge and lack of curiosity that makes him completely inept for this job.”

The White House granted press credentials to a Christian news site whose founder claimed that President Donald Trump's impeachment was a "Jew coup" organized by a "Jewish cabal" in anti-Semitic remarks.

Five employees of the Florida-based conservative Christian news outlet TruNews received press credentials from the White House to cover Trump's trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week, founder Rick Wiles told The New York Times from a ski lodge reserved for press members by the Trump administration. The outlet was not granted special access to Trump, though TruNews' Edward Szall asked Ivanka Trump a question during a news conference, according to the report.

Laura Ingraham wants to remove Adam Schiff from Congress: ‘It’s not clear that congressmen can’t be impeached’

Fox News host Laura Ingraham floated a novel legal theory on Monday in an attempt to remove Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) from Congress: that members of Congress can be impeached.

"It’s not clear that congressmen can’t be impeached, by the way," Laura Ingraham told Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA).

"It's not clear that they cannot be impeached," she repeated.

Ingraham was simply wrong on the facts, the constitution does not allow the impeachment of members of Congress.

The constitutional mechanism to remove a member of Congress before the end of their two-year term is for two-thirds of the body to vote to expel the member.

The United States and other nations raced to get their citizens out of the locked-down Chinese city at ground-zero of a virus epidemic on Tuesday, as the death toll surged to 106 and the number of confirmed infections doubled to over 4,500.

The deadly virus, which experts believe emanated from a wild animal market in the city of Wuhan last month, has triggered a desperate Chinese containment effort after spreading nationwide and to more than a dozen other countries.

The government has sealed off Wuhan and other cities in central Hubei province, effectively trapping more than 50 million people, including thousands of foreigners, in a bid to contain the virus as the high-travel Lunar New Year holiday unfolds.
