The author of a biography of President Donald Trump and a CNN political commentator said on Saturday that they doubt very much that Trump has recordings of his meetings with ousted FBI Director James Comey.
In a panel discussion, The Truth About Trump author Michael D’Antonio said that Trump is merely putting his “showman” skills to work and that the first executive has a history of lying under oath, so his “100 percent” willingness to testify is meaningless.
Trump lies so much, D’Antonio said, that he never interviewed him without a witness who was also recording the interview and taking notes, describing it as a “suspenders and a belt situation.”
“I’m not going to speculate on how or why the president made the remarks he did about Mr. Comey,” said CNN political commentator Matthew Axelrod. “Respectfully, I think the issue of the tapes is sort of a sideshow that’s been created by the president to distract attention from what we know to be the facts.”
D’Antonio said, “This just sounds to me like showmanship. It’s what you’d expect from the host of a reality TV show. It’s not what you’d expect from the president of the United States.”
