Fox News’ Shep Smith on Thursday poured cold water on the president’s claim that Donald Trump Jr. did not take a meeting with a lawyer from the Russian government, noting emails scheduling the meeting clearly lay out her connection to the Kremlin.
“President Trump is defending his son’s controversial meeting with a Russian lawyer by claiming most people in politics would have taken the same meeting,” Smith began, referencing Donald Trump’s joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Most people would have taken that meeting,” Trump said during that press conference, adding that it was the same as opposition research he’s been offered many times.
“There you go,” Smith snarked after rolling a clip of the president. “Today is the first time President Trump has taken questions on camera since he returned home from Germany on Saturday. President Trump called his eldest son a ‘great young man’ and ‘a fine person.’ He also said zero happened from the meeting and the lawyer was not with the Russian government.”
Smith noted the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and Russian officials have denied she has ties to the Kremlin. “But she does,” Smith said.
“Emails show a middle man who reached out to Donald Trump Jr. to arrange the meeting called her a Russian government attorney,” Smith said. “It said so right there in the email! That’s what he thought he was going to meet.”
Smith also pointed out the emails clearly referenced the “Russian government’s support for Donald Trump.”
“The president’s son says he took the meeting as a courtesy for an acquaintance,” Smith said, noting the emails show a different story.
