Scott Balber, the lawyer for Russian pop singer Emin Agalarov, went on CNN Wednesday morning to defend his client against accusations of links to the Kremlin -- but he wound up wilting under tough questioning by host Chris Cuomo.
In making his case that the Agalarov family had no ties to the Russian government, Balber claimed that emails sent by Agalarov's publicist, Rob Goldstone, were factually incorrect when they described a phone call between Agalarov and Trump Jr.
"I really can't speak to what Rob Goldstone was thinking, or what he wrote, or why, but I'll tell you again that call didn't happen," he said. "I don't know if there was someone else who spoke to Donald Trump Jr. about this prospective meeting, but it wasn't my client."
"So Mr. Goldstone, who is the publicist for your client, was wrong when he suggested that Donald Trump Jr. had spoken with your client?" Cuomo then asked. "And he was wrong when he said, 'The crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father this morning, and in their meeting, offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents... very high-level, sensitive, and part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump?'"
When Balber didn't object to Cuomo's characterization of his arguments, Cuomo then lit into him.
"That is some doozy of a lie!" Cuomo said to him of Goldstone's alleged misstatements. "That's a lot of information and specificity just to pitch a meeting, is it not?"
"Again, I can't speak for Rob Goldstone, but I will tell you again, categorically, that no meeting between the Russian prosecutors and Mr. Agalarov happened in any respect."
Cuomo then proceeded to drop the hammer.
"When did your client fire Mr. Goldstone?" he asked.
"I don't know that he fired Mr. Goldstone," Balber admitted.
"The man told a lie like this about your client and he didn't fire him as his publicist?" the CNN host asked incredulously.
Balber stammered and tried to explain that Agalarov only saw the Goldstone email on Tuesday, and he hasn't had enough time to decide whether Goldstone should be fired.
