Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to visit Ukraine just 48 hours after President Donald Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summitt.
According to former Ukrain reporter Ian Bateson, Tillerson will “visit Kiev for a few hours on Sunday after Trump and Putin meet.”
The Russian news agency Sputnik confirmed the Kiev meeting on Tuesday.
Trump has reportedly asked his staff to prepare “concessions” for his meeting with Putin. But it was not immediately clear if those concessions included lifting sanctions placed on Russia after its illegal annexation of Crimea, a former Ukrainian territory.
By visiting Ukraine so soon after Trump’s meeting with Putin, Tillerson is putting himself in a position to do damage control for the president.
