US intel grew concerned in Spring 2016 when European agencies warned about Russian money in the election
U.S. intelligence officials grew concerned over Russian meddling in Spring 2016, after European intelligence agencies warned “Russian money might be flowing into the presidential election,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
The news comes as part of a larger article published Wednesday by the Journal, which indicated intelligence agencies overheard Russian officials discussing Donald Trump as early as Spring 2015.
Officials are reviewing those conversations after Donald Trump Jr. on Tuesday released an email correspondence indicating his willingness to meet with a Russian emissary to obtain damaging information on Hillary Clinton.
By June 2016, the Democratic National Committee revealed hackers—directed by the Russian government—had infiltrated their computer systems and stolen critical information.
