The editorial director of The Daily Caller on Tuesday blamed the “fake news” media for elevating a much-maligned piece on Barron Trump published Monday by the conservative site.
“Leave it to the fake news to spin his bro-to-bro advice into some sort of ‘slam,’” Vince Coglianese told the Associated Press. “[The author] is just looking out for the kid. Leave Barron alone.”
“Leave Barron alone” became the rallying cry for political journalists and politicians alike on Tuesday after Fox Host Tucker Carlson’s news site published a “mean spirited” article imploring Trump’s youngest son start dressing the part of presidential son.
“It’s high time Barron Trump starts dressing like he’s in the White House,” entertainment reporter Ford Springer insisted in a piece that unilaterally determined “the least he could do is dress the part when he steps out in public.”
The article drew sharp criticism from across the ideological spectrum. Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton renewed her call for the media to respect Barron Trump’s privacy, arguing “It’s high time the media & everyone leave Barron Trump alone & let him have the private childhood he deserves.”

The White House on Tuesday similarly asked the media to leave Barron alone.
“As with all previous administrations, we ask that the media give Barron his privacy,” Stephanie Grisha, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump, told the AP. “He is a minor child and deserves every opportunity to have a private childhood.”
The Caller’s Coglianese dismissed criticism of his site, spinning the bipartisan rebuke as the product of media hyperventilation.
“Let’s not pretend the press is suddenly concerned about defending the Trumps,” Coglianese said told the AP in an email. He also described Springer as “the most pro-Barron Trump writer I’ve ever met,” according to the AP.
