Shocking video shows Los Angeles bar owner beating a homeless man on the street
Bar owner Christian Frizell was spotted beating up a well-known homeless man outside of his establishment as a horrified passerby captured the incident on video.
Frank Chiari is a regular who has lived on the streets of LA for as many as 20 years, according to Fox11. Residents describe him as “kind” while others consider him “troubled.”
He was sitting near the downtown bar, The Redwood, when Frizell was spotted by Dylan Doren, who began filling the incident.
“Hey! Leave him alone!” Doren can be heard shouting as Frizell knocks Chiari over and into the street.
“It was crazy to watch and I was like in shock,” Doren said. “The guy was punching him, hitting him in the head, in the face and in the temple. He knocked him down and he got back up and he continued.”
Doren said that the police were called and while they were waiting for the patrol car to arrive, Frizzell began calling him names and questioning his race.
“I responded by saying ‘why are you asking me what my race?’ It’s like what does it matter? And he answered ‘I know what race I am. I am an American,'” recalled Doren.
Frizell released a statement saying he was “embarrassed” and “saddened” by being caught in the video but swore that Chiari has been harassing his customers for years. He claimed Chiari was asked to leave but that he became aggressive and began hitting and spitting on Frizell.
“I defended myself and restrained him in an effort to prevent any escalation of a tense situation,” Frizzell said in the statement. “It’s never fun to have to forcefully remove someone from your business.”
He also swore that he isn’t a “bigot or a racist,” rather he’s a small business owner who “is a father of four.” He claims any accusations about race are “false.”
