MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell blasted White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders for her “utterly pointless…press briefing” on Thursday.
While reporters asked questions like it was a normal day, she refused to provide any answers, because she had none.
“Once again, the press secretary could not answer the question of why is the president threatening a government shutdown over the wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for,” O’Donnell said. “Now that the president has switched from threatening Mexico about paying for the wall to threatening the United States Congress about paying for the wall, threatening the American people about paying for the wall, naturally, the White House got this question today.”
He showed a clip of Sanders saying that she didn’t think the effort to have Mexico pay for the wall was abandoned.
“Yeah, OK, but the president did abandon it in a phone call with the president of Mexico, the transcript of which was leaked by the Trump White House,” O’Donnell explained, citing the phone call in which Trump begged Enrique Peña Nieto not to talk about the wall.
“Everyone in the world now knows that Donald Trump has completely given up on getting Mexico to pay for the wall and Mexico is is not going to pay one penny for that wall,” O’Donnell continued. “And so the White House press secretary today instead of the truth today, chose the most childish response she possibly could have.”
He then played the clip of CBS News reporter Major Garrett asking Sanders how it isn’t a concession to threaten to shutdown the government if Congress doesn’t fund something Trump claimed Mexico would pay for.
“Again, this is something the president is committed to, committed to protecting American lives and doing that is through the border wall,” O’Donnell commented. “We’re moving forward.”
“He’s not saying Mexico is going to pay for it,” Garrett said.
“He hasn’t said they’re not, either,” Sanders retorted.
“He hasn’t said they’re not?!” O’Donnell exclaimed. “Your average first grader could not do better than that, your average first grader could not do worse than that. That’s the average you’re watching now, first grade. Here’s the final entry in the wall discussion today in the very silly game of asking the questions to the person who does not know the answer to the questions and does not even know what an answer is. >> president trump said if we have to close down our government, we’re building that wall. Does he stand by that statement?”
She claimed Trump has been clear, the reporters persisted, but Sanders claimed she answered the question.
“No. You haven’t answered the question,” he said. “Not once. you haven’t come close to answering the question, will the president try to shut down the government in order to get the wall paid for? It is just a bold-faced lie to stand up there at the end of that sequence and say, I think I’ve answered this question several times. Try that in court sometime when you never answer a question. That is a lie.”
He went on to say that the years of Trump lying might be the one way to show GOP voters two important things.
“One, he tells gigantic lies, like nothing we’ve ever seen before in American politics, and, Two, he is the most ineffective president of the United States that we have ever had,” O’Donnell closed.
