Cornel West: Trump needs to ‘get off the symbolic crack pipe’ and wake up to America’s racial reality
In discussing President Donald Trump’s “anthem tantrum” comments against athletes who choose to protest police brutality on the field, famed philosopher Dr. Cornel West said the president is acting like he’s on crack.
“I think the president needs to get off the symbolic crack pipe and have a sense of reality,” West told Cooper and former George W. Bush aide Paris Dennard on Tuesday night.
“The reason why these courageous young people are standing up is because they have a love for black people, justice and fairness and they’re concerned about a racist criminal justice system,” West continued. “It’s a beautiful thing to see this moral and spiritual thing taking place among the athletes.”
West, who was at times a confidante for former President Barack Obama, famously backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination last year.
