The former lead prosecutor for Robert Mueller, Andrew Weissmann, predicted that Donald Trump's indictment was coming "in days not weeks," and he was proved correct on Thursday.
His voice joined with many legal analysts who spoke out about the news. In one thread, Ryan Goodman quickly mentioned that a group of legal experts at JustSecurity outlined the specifics of the Espionage Act and how it would work with Trump.
One of the pieces of the story that Weissmann pointed out is that there are many lower-level, very young people who ultimately end up being prosecuted for mishandling classified information. It's for that reason that he felt Trump had to be indicted.
The Nation's legal analyst Elie Mystal agreed, responding to a rage tweet from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) claiming people in power shouldn't be able to prosecute their opponents, even if they broke the law.
"Actually, as I pointed out, if people in power can avoid jail by returning to power, we don’t have a republic. That’s literally how the most famous one died," said Mystal.
Legal analyst Brad Moss also commented with faux mockery: "If DOJ can indict Trump for willful retention of NDI and obstruction, they can indict ANYONE for willful retention of NDI and obstruction. The horror!"
Michigan University Law School Professor Barb McQuade cited New York Times reporting saying that the "charges include conspiracy to obstruct justice. Federal conspiracy law requires two or more people to constitute conspiracy."
She wondered, "Who is/are the co-conspirator(s)?"
Moss speculated it might be "Walt Nauta and maybe Boris are my guesses." But that information has not currently been released.
Florida attorney and attorney general candidate Daniel Uhlfelder tweeted simply: "Lock him up."
In that same vein, "Someone let Trump know the following: You’re going to prison, traitor," civil rights lawyer Andrew C. Laufer tweeted.
One of the things that Alabama University Law School Professor Joyce White Vance mentioned is the importance of cameras in the courtroom for the Trump trial.
"Chief Justice Roberts should immediately amend the rules to permit cameras in federal courts. The American public is entitled to watch the proceedings against Trump in their entirety. Anything less would be an injustice," she tweeted Thursday evening.

Donald Trump Jr. and other top associates of Donald Trump are using news of the former president's federal indictment in the documents case to bring up recent allegations made against Joe Biden.
While some Democrats have questioned whether the allegations of Biden paying a bribe were made to distract attention away from the senior Trump's own legal troubles, his son had a different theory after news of the indictment broke.
"On the same day that a story broke about a whistleblower alleging Joe Biden took a 5 million dollar bribe from Burisma in Ukraine, Biden's corrupt DOJ decides to indict Trump over BS charges," he wrote on Twitter. "Do you really think that's a coincidence??"
Trump Jr. further claimed in a follow-up tweet that, "We have a Two-Tiered Justice System in America under Biden and his corrupt DOJ!"
Those sentiments were echoed by House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, who said the new indictment was a "politically motivated indictment of Joe Biden's leading political opponent."
"The exact same day that the FBI is forced to turn over to Congress absolutely damning and credible allegations regarding Joe Biden's illegal, egregious, and treasonous corruption, Joe Biden weaponizes his Department of Justice to indict Donald Trump," Stefanik wrote.
She further added that the American people "are smart and understand that this is the epitome of the illegal and unprecedented weaponization of the federal government against Joe Biden's leading opponent, President Donald J. Trump."
"The radical Far Left will stop at nothing to interfere with the 2024 election in order to prop up the catastrophic presidency and desperate campaign of Joe Biden," Stefanik said Thursday.
She concluded by saying that she is "committed to ending the corrupt political weaponization of our federal government, cutting the rot in these agencies, and holding government officials accountable for their endless illegal witch hunt against President Trump. In 2024, we will vote like this country has never seen before and we will elect President Trump back to the White House to save America."
A defiant Donald Trump proclaimed his innocence in a newly released video Thursday after the former president learned he has been indicted in connection with the handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
“Very sadly we’re a nation in decline and yet they go after a popular president, a president that that got more votes than any sitting president in the history of our country, by far, and did much better the second time in the election then the first, and they go after him on a boxes hoax, just like the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, and all of the others,” Trump said, standing in front of a painting wearing a navy suit, white shirt, and a red tie.
“It has been going on for seven years that they can't stop, because it's election interference at the highest level.”
Trump in the four-minute video touted his accomplishments as president and suggested that he’s being prosecuted over his rise in the polls in recent months.
“But when you look at what's happened to our country in the last three years, we were energy independent, we had a strong military that wasn't woke, we were doing so well. We were respected all over the world, we had the biggest tax cuts in history, biggest regulation cuts in history,” Trump said.
“And what do you do, you have the president where an election was taken got more votes than any sitting president in history by far, never anything even close, and they come after me? Because now we're leading in the polls, again, by a lot against Biden and against the Republicans by a lot, but we're leading against Biden by a lot, a tremendous amount."
“And we went up to a level that they figured the only way they're going to stop us is by using what's called 'warfare.' And that's what it is. This is warfare for the law. And we can't let it happen. We can't let it happen.”
