The chairman of the North Carolina GOP issued a statement condemning Charlotte Republican mayoral candidate Kimberley Barnette for using her whiteness as a qualification. Her now-deleted Facebook "about me" section claimed people should vote for her because she is "REPUBLICAN & SMART, WHITE, TRADITIONAL."

According to NC's WRAL news station, chairman Robin Hayes said using race as a reason to vote for someone "is offensive to North Carolina Republicans and we condemn it."

"This type of suggestion has no place in our public discourse," Hayes said.
