Hurricane Irma pounded a string of islands in the northeast Caribbean Sea, lashing them with heavy rain and winds up to 180 mph.
At least nine people have been killed as the hurricane cuts across Barbuda, St. Martin and the British Virgin Islands, leaving devastation in its path.
The New York Times posted video recorded in the Virgin Islands, where homes were completely destroyed.
“Look, literally have a house — they had a house right there, it’s gone,” one woman says on the video.
Puerto Rico was spared a direct hit, but it suffered widespread flooding and power outages.
The hurricane is one of the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s expected to hit Florida over the weekend and move north up the coast early next week.
