Republican facing ethics probe -- 'substantial reason to believe' he misused campaign funds: report
March 01, 2021
The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) found there is "substantial reason to believe" Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) converted campaign funds for his personal use, The Washington Post reported Monday.
The OCE released a 47-page report on its initial investigation.

"The probe was prompted by a complaint last March from the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center, which accused Palazzo of using his campaign contributions as a 'personal slush fund through which he paid 'himself and his spouse nearly $200,000,' including $60,000 in rent to his own farm," the newspaper reported. "In its report, the OCE said that it had found 'limited evidence of campaign use of the property, especially to justify $60,000.00 in rent and thousands of dollars of additional charges to maintain the home and improve its marketability."

Read the full OCE report.

Maskless Trump supporter turned in by his own family for being inside the Capitol during riot: report
March 01, 2021
The FBI and federal prosecutors continue to make progress identifying people who were inside the U.S. Capitol during the fatal January 6th insurrection.
"Federal authorities had help identifying the pony-tailed man wearing a 'Keep America Great' sweatshirt who popped up in numerous photographs inside the U.S. Capitol. Grayson Sherrill's family turned him in," the Charlotte Observer reported Monday.

"A newly unsealed complaint charges Sherrill with three felonies: knowingly entering and remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; knowingly engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted area; and violent and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds," the newspaper reported. "A series of photographs included in the federal complaint against him shows a dark-haired, pony-tailed man wearing jeans, combat boots and a red Trump sweatshirt moving through the Capitol carrying either a rod or cane-like object."

He was identified by two members of his family, according to the criminal complaint.

Using rectal swab COVID tests on people entering the country is 'science-based': China
March 01, 2021
Japan has asked China to avoid using anal swabs to test its citizens for coronavirus, saying the method prompted complaints of "psychological distress".
Tokyo's intervention comes after reports that US diplomatic personnel in China had complained of being subjected to the intrusive tests -- a claim Beijing denied.

China, which has largely brought the virus under control domestically, said last month that anal swabs can be more effective than normal throat and nose tests as the virus can linger longer in the digestive system.

But Japanese government spokesman Katsunobu Kato said late Monday that Tokyo had made a formal request through its embassy in Beijing that people arriving from the country be exempted.

"Our embassy requested Japanese citizens be excluded from anal PCR tests, as some Japanese expatriates... expressed the opinion that the tests produce significant psychological distress," Kato said.

"At this point we have not received a response that they change this... We will continue pressing the issue," he added, noting that there was no information that any other country was using the method.

Asked about the complaint, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Beijing's testing methods were "science-based" and "in accordance with the changes in the epidemic situation as well as relevant laws and regulations".

Last month, US media said State Department personnel in China had complained about the method, but Beijing rebuffed the reports, saying it had "never requested US diplomatic personnel in China to undergo anal swabs".

Officials in China have used anal swabs to test people it considers at high-risk of contracting Covid-19, including residents of neighbourhoods with confirmed cases as well as some international travellers.

But they have acknowledged it would be hard to use anal swabs as widely as the other methods, which have been used to test millions in mass campaigns, as the technique was "not convenient".
