A 22-year-old Michigan man was sentenced to almost 16 years in prison after attempting to blackmail an emotionally-disturbed 14-year-old girl to send him nude pictures.
MLive, reports that Derek C. Chapman of Harrison, was sentenced to 188 months in prison on Thursday of last week by U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington.
According to the report, after Chapman is released he will face five additional years of court-ordered supervision.
Court records state that Chapman pleaded guilty in August to one count of attempted sexual exploitation of a child after admitting he used an app to communicate with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl living across the country in Washington state. During chats with the Chapman, the teenager shared a picture of her cutting herself due to depression.
Chapman then threatened to call Child Protective Services in her state, saying they would take her away from her parents, unless she sent him nude pictures of herself.
According to the report, this was not the first time Chapman attempted to coerce teens into providing him with nude pictures.
In exchange for his plea, the U.S. Attorney dropped charges of receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
The man’s attorney said his client was remorseful for his actions and hoped to get sexual offender treatment while incarcerated, as well as obtaining his GED.
