A "Morning Joe" panel on Tuesday roundly condemned the Republican Party for going out of its way to help President Donald Trump attack the FBI and the Department of Justice.
During the panel, host Joe Scarborough lamented that House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Scarborough has known for years, is being completely silent in the face of a full-frontal attack on America's law enforcement institutions.
Axios co-founder Jim Vandehei, however, had a simple explanation for Ryan's complicity: He likes that Trump signed his tax cut package into law.
"They made a deal with the devil and they feel good about it," said Vandehei, who went on to explain that the conservative base really believes the FBI is a left-wing organization filled with partisan liberals who are out to get Trump.
"Paul Ryan believes this?" asked an incredulous Scarborough.
"You can't give any other explanation, so they've so self-rationalized their behavior," Vandehei said. "Everything that's happened, there's been hardly a Republican who is not retiring who has spoken critically of Donald Trump on this."
Scarborough then fumed that the entire Republican Party is on the "yellow brick road to hell" over its efforts to cover for Trump.
