The White House on Thursday released photos of now-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during the former CIA director’s clandestine trip to the country over Easter weekend — and Twitter can’t handle how weird the whole scene is.
Great to have Secretary Pompeo confirmed. He will do an excellent job helping @POTUS lead our efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. (photos from previously confirmed Easter weekend trip) pic.twitter.com/o4RNDKVmah

As the Washington Post‘s David Nakamura noted, the North Korean leader “is racking up the photos with global leaders” — a show of power that has been a “goal” of his family’s regime.
White House distributed the Pompeo-Kim photos but did not say who the photographer was. Would love to know.

“I wouldn’t have guessed I would see photos like this in my life time,” investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson tweeted of the rare meeting between representatives of erstwhile enemy states.

You have to imagine that Pompeo was practicing the right non-smile for hours. Need to telegraph exactly the right attitude or risk giving Kim even more of a propaganda victory. https://t.co/zhGsbEIhSi

How does Kim look so old already? And why are they both so fat? Are they going to bump bellies or something? Is this about to be a sumo match? https://t.co/EjnbXIJdMs

North Korea already won without giving up anything. A photo-op with Pompeo is a massive concession.
It's incredible how this administration is perfectly terrible at virtually everything. https://t.co/vwkxQ8s12f
