A church in Texas was forced to take down their “America is a Christian nation” billboard after it drew criticisms from the local government.

The city made Robert Jeffres, who pastors First Baptist Dallas, remove their sign after a negative news reports.

The Dallas Morning News published two articles calling the sign “hateful” and “divisive,” and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings was quoted in the article agreeing with the statements.

The articles were then sent to Outfront Media, who created the billboard, and the company decided to remove the billboard. Outfront Media also canceled their contract with the church.

“Let’s be very clear: We do not object to the billboard company’s right to refuse to post our message,” Jeffress told CBN News. “What we do object to is the city of Dallas, its mayor and any other officials indirectly interfering with our church’s right to publish its own message. Our question is simply this: Did the city of Dallas directly or indirectly in any way threatens the billboard company? If so, I think that is an action that is illegal,” Jeffress said.

Since the billboard was taken down, another company offered to put up 20 billboards throughout the city.

“I thank Mayor Rawlings and the Dallas Morning News for helping us promote our message,” he said.

This isn’t the first time Jeffres made headlines. The pastor is well known for his bigotry and making  long  offensive remarks  against Judaism, and LGBTQ people.
