In a video acquired by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution an Atlanta policeman was shown taking a surprise punch at a suspect and then shoving the man’s mother to the ground as she tried to defend him.
After clips of the video surfaced on social media, the department released the entire 3-minute video. The officer in the video has not been identified.
While being chased by police, Barnwell ran multiple red lights and hit another car. He eventually jumped out of his vehicle and ran into a wooded area. The video shows Barnwell running back to his car to grab a red bag. According to the police report the bag contained “several bags of raw marijuana.”
At this point the officer told Barnwell to put his hands in the air, and a fight broke out. The officer began throwing punches towards Barnwell.
His mother Jennifer Barnwell was at the scene and tried to get the police officer to stop fighting. However, the officer then shoves her and she falls to the ground.
Officers arrested the family, and they will face obstruction charges. In addition, Harold Barnwell will face marijuana possession charges.
The police department released this statement: “We are aware of the video and the complaint filed with our Office of Professional Standards. We will investigate the matter and take appropriate action if it is determined any departmental policies or procedures were not followed.”
The officers involved have not been placed on administrative leave.
