Police in Shorewood, Wisconsin have arrested a 17-year-old student after he used social media and threatened to lynch black students if they performed in the play "To Kill a Mockingbird."

According to WDJT, the classic drama about racial injustice was to be performed at Shorewood High School on Wednesday night but was canceled after school authorities grew concerned about protests and possible violence.

According to the police, the unidentified 17-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after making the lynching threat, but the student's name was not released.

News of the threat brought out a local branch of the Black Panthers who stated that they were willing to provide protection for students if needed.

An email was sent to parents and students early Wednesday morning saying there would be a dress rehearsal for the family of the cast and crew members only that evening -- however, that was also canceled.
