Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA), who exploded onto the scene in 2014 when he took down incumbent Rep. Eric Cantor, has now been defeated in his reelection by Democrat Abigail Spanberger, according to projections from NBC News and Bloomberg.

Although VA-07 has historically been a conservative district, it became much more blue after the election of President Donald Trump two years ago. Spanberger wound up winning the district by under 5,000 votes, and she and Brat both traded leads in vote tallies for hours on Tuesday.

In addition to winning VA-07, Virginia Democrat Jennifer Wexton also defeated Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock in Virginia's 10th Congressional district.
