Conservative CNN anchor Michael Smerconish faced a fierce backlash on Saturday after defending right-wing billionaire Robert Kraft’s arrest on prostitution charges.
Prosecutors have alleged that sex workers involved were victims of human trafficking.
Smerconish, however, thought the criticism of Kraft — who is friends with President Donald Trump — went too far.

Smerconish and CNN were highly criticized for the position.
Here is a sampling of what some people were saying:
This wasn’t just prostitution, this was trafficking women who could not speak English, and didn’t have access to basic hygiene. If a woman is trafficked that’s not prostitution, its rape. They do not have the agency to consent

Paying for sex with someone who is being held against her will is rape. So, yes. https://t.co/7KTfwriLyL

Imagine wanting someone to avoid punishment because they’re wealthy, white and old

– – – @CNN is definitely part of America's billionaire problem.

Another reason to avoid @cnn like the plague. How do these dorks keep getting air time? Misdemeanor arrest? The man was busted having sex with imprisoned girls in a two bit hell hole. Who cares how old he is? https://t.co/iI18KqfcqC

@smerconish is trying so hard to "bothsides" everything, all the time, he now finds himself unconscionably defending sex trafficking. That's what happens when you push a narrative and ignore facts. @CNN is sinking fast. https://t.co/Z0amroW6ub

Prostitution shouldn't be illegal, not even a misdemeanor, but it needs to be 100% CONSENSUAL.
There is no way any reasonable person could think walking into a massage spa and paying the front desk to get a "happy ending" with a woman who can't speak English is consensual.

Human trafficking. Sex slaves. Yes. Yes, he does deserve it. It is foul and horrible. https://t.co/oszjOegWWR

For paying for sex from sex slaves – women being held against their will, brought here on false pretenses, then forced into being a sex slave – for paying for they and helping to keep that going – he doesn't deserve to be called a sleaze?

The women were held against their will and required to have sex 24/7, 365 days a week. This old rich man is a criminal.

A billionaire sexually exploiting immigrant women in virtual servitude? If true, I’d argue “yes.” https://t.co/dqmNETzGof

3 conservatives billionaires involved in GOP politics have been caught up in these human trafficking spas in south Fla. 3. You'd have us believe they all strolled into same strip mall spa by coincidence? Occam's Razor (this is an operation known by/shared by this group)
— Katie Rosa (@K_Rosa17) February 23, 2019
Wow! I know you know what human trafficking is. Your statement says more about you than about Kraft. This was not a Nevada brotel! Sex with underage girls who were forced into a life of prostitution and held captive is disgusting. He and others should be held accountable.

Aaaaand, you’d be wrong: https://t.co/6mQzNGFtUs
— Soledad O'Brien (@soledadobrien) February 24, 2019
Why do you care that Kraft is 77? He was caught on video paying for sex at a strip mall in Florida where women were being trafficked. That deserves some public shaming.
— Carrie Russell (@CarrieRu) February 23, 2019
Kraft's a big boy and no one has him in a back room servicing hundreds of rich men. My empathy is confined to the VICTIMS.
