‘Looks like the DOJ covering for the president’: CNN’s Toobin flattens Bill Barr for aiding Trump’s propaganda

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on Thursday took Attorney General Bill Barr to task for doing everything in his power to spin special counsel Robert Mueller’s report into a positive for President Donald Trump.

During a panel discussion, CNN host Alisyn Camerota asked Toobin if “there is anything strange about Barr’s team briefing the White House” about Mueller’s report before releasing it to either Congress or the public.

Toobin said that the briefings in and of themselves aren’t sinister — but he couldn’t help see them that way given all of Barr’s other actions.

“What’s worth remembering is everything Barr and the Justice Department have done since early March, when Mueller turned in his report, has been spun in the same direction,” he said. “Everything has been to make the president look as good as possible.”

He then recounted Barr’s four-page letter summarizing Mueller’s conclusions that cleared the president of obstructing justice — even though Mueller’s report specifically said it could not exonerate the president on this charge. He also said that the long delay in releasing the report looked suspicious, as well as the insinuation that there was unlawful “spying” that occurred on Trump’s campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

“When you take them together, it looks like the Justice Department is covering for the president,” he said.
