Authorities say they found a note in the car belonging to the 25-year old man suspected of shooting up a church in Tennessee on Sunday that “referenced retaliation” for the deadly 2015 church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina, the Associated Press reports.
Emanuel Kidega Samson has been charged with felony homicide after police say he attacked churchgoers at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, killing one and injuring seven. Samson acknowledged he opened fire at the church, police told reporters Sunday.
As the AP reports, authorities have opened a civil rights investigation into the attack.
In January avowed white supremacist Dylan Roof was given the death sentence after being convicted of a federal hate crime for the murder of nine black churchgoers at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC.
