Why did the Tennessee GOP pay for bizarre Google ads that attacked their own party?

The Tennessee Republican Party seems to be taking a page out of the Donald Trump playbook and ginning up anger and enthusiasm among their base.

The Tennesseean discovered the ad when searching for former Gov. Phil Bredssen (D-TN) who is running for the U.S. Senate against former Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

"Trump Voters Idiots According | To Top Bredesen Spokesman," the ad headline reads. "Phil Bredesen spokesman calls Trump voters "idiots" and tweets insults Trump. [sic]. Paid for by Tennessee Republican Party Federal Election Account."

With Google's new ad algorithm a "paid for by" disclaimer now appears on political advertisemsents.

The ad leads to a Tennesseean article about Mark Brown, a Democratic Party operative who called Trump supporters "idiots" on social media. He also repeated former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, calling Trump a "f*cking moron" in another tweet.

Brown doesn't work for the Bredesen campaign, however, much less serve as a spokesperson for the campaign.
