Donald Trump's impeachment legal team bailed out over a payment dispute, and not just in disagreement over strategy.
The former president had initially agreed to pay a $250,000 fee to lead lawyer Butch Bowers for his services, and amount that "delighted" Trump, but he then was "infuriated" when the attorney listed other expenses for other lawyers and researchers, reported Axios.
That payment request was for as much as $3 million, and an angry Trump tried to haggle the attorney back down to $1 million.
Five members of the impeachment legal team pulled out over the dispute with Bowers, and Trump then announced he would be represented by Bruce Castor and David Schoen.
Initial reports had suggested the former president's lawyers left because Trump wanted them to focus their defense on baseless allegations of election fraud rather than constitutional arguments about convicting a president after he'd left office.
