(Reuters) - Shares of videogame retailer GameStop Corp slumped on Monday, losing ground along with a slew of other social media-hyped stocks that took investors on a wild ride earlier this month. GameStop and other "meme stocks," including cinema operator AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc and headphone maker Koss have seen wild gyrations in their share prices over the past two weeks as amateur investors on forums such as Reddit's WallStreetBets acted in concert to bid up stocks that some U.S. funds had bet against. The volatility has drawn the attention of regulators, although U.S. Treasury Secre...
Huffington Post reporter S.V. Dáte doesn't think former Vice President Mike Pence has gotten enough credit for his actions on January 6th, 2021.
Writing on Twitter, Dáte examines how Pence changed the traditional script during the roll call of electors on January 6th to specifically rule out accepting the "alternate" electors that Trump allies had lined up to support his bid for a second term.
"Not only did he not go along with Trump's scheme to use 'alternate' slates of electors to give Trump a second term, he actively sabotaged it," Dáte observes.
He then compares a key difference between the instructions that then-Vice President Joe Biden gave to electoral vote counters back in 2017 and the instructions that Pence gave to vote counters last year.
In particular, Pence told the counters to "announce the votes cast by the electors for each state, beginning with Alabama, which the parliamentarian has advised me is the only certificate of vote from that state and purports to be a return from that state that has annexed to it a certificate from an authority of that state purporting to appoint or ascertain electors."
Dáte goes on to say that Pence "didn't just make that up on the fly" but rather "crafted it in advance to specifically reject any fake set of electors that Trump's agents in Congress would try to push."
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been spotted dining out on the town in Manhattan despite the fact that she recently tested positive for COVID-19 and should be in isolation.
The New York Daily News reports that a spokesman for New York Mayor Eric Adams has now put out an advisory warning New Yorkers about the danger of coming in contact with Palin.
"We encourage any New Yorker who came into contact with Sarah Palin to get tested, just as we encourage all New Yorkers to get tested regularly, especially those who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19,” Adams spokesman Jonah Allon said.
The Daily News notes that Palin, who has steadfastly refused to get vaccinated, was spotted on Wednesday at an Upper East Side Italian eatery just days after she revealed her infection.
Luca Guaitolini, the manager of the restaurant, tells the Daily News that Palin's visit was "unfortunate" but that "we’ve moved on" from talking about it.
'Obvious criminality': CNN's Jake Tapper highlights potentially illegal actions Trump took in broad daylight
On Thursday's edition of CNN's "The Lead," anchor Jake Tapper discussed how the January 6 Committee might get to the bottom of former President Donald Trump's involvement in the attack with committee member Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
"We're showing video right now of [attorney John] Eastman speaking at the January 6 'Stop the Steal' rally," said Tapper. "There's so much of this that just played out in front of all of our eyes. Trump citing Eastman's argument. Trump saying that Pence needed to overturn the election. Trump saying to the crowd, let's go to the Capitol, we need to fight, etcetera, etcetera. What more are you hoping to find? Are you hoping to find a money trail that shows Trump okaying some sort of operation in which people start getting bussed in? It seems like there's so much obvious criminality that we all saw happen."
"Well, a lot of this was done in public," said Lofgren. "I think there's a set of people that think, if it's in public, maybe it wasn't wrong. We want to find the behind-the-scenes elements and see who was involved in the plot, what were the intentions. I mean, this was — clearly we know already — not just some random event where people showed up randomly on the 6th of January. There were people who plotted it. We've had interviews with Proud Boys. We've had interviews with many others in the Trump administration."
"We need to get the full story," added Lofgren. "Not only to lay out the picture, but also to inform ourselves for the legislative recommendations we're going to make. That would include not only reform to the Electoral Count Act, but potentially the Insurrection Act, which the former president repeatedly throughout the election year threatened to invoke without cause and the like. So we are moving quickly, and I think we're more than halfway through, for sure."
