Some establishment Republicans are circling the wagons around Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) after she generated controversy in GOP ranks after voting to impeach Donald Trump.
Cheney has been under fire from Trump supporters like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) after voting to hold Trump accountable for inciting the fatal Capitol insurrection.
In a statement released to CNN, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) praised Cheney.
"Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them," McConnell said. "She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation."
McConnell's statement came one week before the start of Trump's impeachment trail.
