Nairobi- A couple found having sex in a mosque during Ramadan were sentenced to one and a half years imprisonment each, a Kenyan magistrate official told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. Peter Kimani and Jennifer Wairimu pleaded guilty to fornicating in the Abubakar Mosque in Gilgil, a town about 100 kilometres northwest of Nairobi.
"They said they were drunk and they thought they were in a lodging," the court official said.
The Muslim holy month of Ramadan strictly forbids activities during daytime hours which might hinder attaining closeness with god, such as eating, drinking or having sex.
Kimani and Wairimu are not Muslims, the official said.
The couple were caught on the eve of October 3 and brought before a court three days later. They have two weeks as of the sentencing date to appeal the decision.
