Moscow- A Georgian policeman was killed in a clash at a police station on the border with the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia over night, the Georgian government reported Friday. The government cited by the Interfax news agency said a second policeman was injured in the attack by Abkhazian fighters armed with machine guns and grenades.

The Georgian-Abkhazian border has seen increased clashes recently, with three Abkhazian policemen killed in the past week.

Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili has made it his stated goal to bring Abkhazia and the other breakaway territory of South Ossetia back into Georgia. Both territories split from Georgia in a civil war in the 1990s.
