Bucharest- Zoe Ceausescu, the daughter of Romania's communist-era ex-dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, has died from lung cancer, media reports said Tuesday. Born in 1950, Zoe studied mathematics and had lived a reclusive life in Bucharest with her husband in recent years, the news agency Mediafax reported.
She was the last surviving biological child of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu, who were executed on December 25, 1989 after a massive uprising against their communist regime. Her brother Nicu died in 1996. Still surviving is an adopted son, Valentin.
After their parents' execution, all three children were briefly arrested on charges of "undermining the national economy" but the proceedings were eventually dropped, in 1996.
She was in the news again in recent years when she sought, unsuccessfully, to get a court order for an exhumation of a grave at the Ghencea cemetery in Bucharest to clarify whether the remains there were actually those of her parents. She doubted that her parents had been buried there.
