Veteran comic actor, writer and radio show host Harry Shearer is in the running for an award for his musical take on prisoner torture.

"Waterboardin', USA," created by Shearer as a Beach Boys-style spoof that "almost makes torture look like fun," has been nominated in the "Funniest Web Video" category of the 2007 Online Video Awards, hosted by TV Guide.

Waterboarding, an interrogation tactic -- reportedly once authorized by a 2002 presidential finding -- that simulates drowning, has become a controversial issue once again as Michael Mukasey seeks to become the next U.S. Attorney General. Mukasey has been evasive in sharing his opinion of waterboarding-as-torture during Senate confirmation hearings.

Opening with a statement by Vice President Cheney regarding the procedure, the video follows with Shearer and friends singing (and dressed) in the distinctive style of the Beach Boys, "Well it may not be legal but it sure as heck makes me safer / and it may not yield useful intel, at least that's what they say / But it's a pleasure so rare, seeing captives gulp air / Let's go waterboardin' USA."

The video originated on the website My Damn Channel, which features the work of Harry Shearer, Andy Milonakis and others.
