Mayan, former Nobel Peace Prize winner to stand in elections

Guatemala City- Rigoberta Menchu, a winner of the Nobel
Peace Prize and of Mayan descent, on Monday announced that she would
run for president of Guatemala.
Menchu was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in her fight for the
rights of Guatemala's indigenous population in the face of the
country's right-wing dictatorship.
"In Guatemala's history, Mayans have only ever exercised their
right to vote, but not to be elected," she said in announcing her
Presidential, parliamentary and local elections in Guatemala are
set for September.
