A CNN panel on Wednesday raked Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) over the coals for his unhinged rants this week about the January 6th riots at the United States Capitol building.

Johnson on Tuesday falsely claimed during a Senate hearing on Tuesday that the pro-Trump demonstrators were "positive and festive" on the day of the riots, despite the fact that they erected a gallows outside the Capitol building and chanted, "Hang Mike Pence!"

Johnson also implied that the crowd was stoked to violence by a combination antifa infiltrators and overly aggressive policing, which drew outrage from CNN political analyst John Avlon.

"Ron Johnson seems to reach for conspiracy theories now when he's confronted with uncomfortable facts," he said. "He is carrying a lot of water for the former president, but he's -- what he did is he read into the record, used five minutes of his time, to redo the record, basically, in an article from a right-wing blog that said this was a false flag operation."

Avlon added that Johnson's behavior was "frankly pathetic" and "a total dereliction of duty."

CNN host Alisyn Camerota speculated that Johnson may have fallen down a "QAnon rabbit hole" and may actually believe the nonsense he's saying.
