15 injured in second Texas community college attack this year
April 09, 2013
At least 15 people were injured in a mass stabbing attack at a Houston community college before the suspect was allegedly caught by a student, CNN reported on Tuesday.
Authorities said one person was in critical condition following the attack at the Cy-Fair campus for Lone Star College, the second violent incident at a Lone Star campus this year. Four more victims were taken to local hospitals via helicopter. Their conditions were not known as of Tuesday afternoon. NBC News reported that another six victims were listed in stable condition.
One student, who identified himself as "James," told KTRK-TV he chased and tackled a student armed with a knife "similar to an exacto knife" after seeing him run out of a building. He said the suspect told him, "I give up, I give up." Officials with the Harris County Sheriff's Department believe the suspect acted on his own and ended a search for additional suspects.
The incident allegedly started around 11:20 a.m. in the Health Sciences building on campus. No possible motive has been identified.
"I do believe the confrontation was limited to a few (classrooms) or just one classroom," said sheriff's department spokesperson Alan Bernstein. "Not anybody roaming around and getting into a large number of areas."
At least three people were shot in a January 22, 2013 attack at the Lone Star campus in the North Harris area. A 22-year-old man, Trey Foster, was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with that incident.
