Cancer survivor forced to 'cover his face' in restaurant -- community rallies behind him

A cancer survivor was asked to cover his face while eating at a local restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina. Kirby Evans lost an eye and nose after battling cancer but said the way he was treated at Forks Pit Stop hurt deep.

“I feel somebody reach up and grab me like this and jerk me into her office,” Evans told WMBF News. Once pulled aside, the employee asked Evans to cover his face if he wanted to continue eating his food inside the restaurant. He added, "It hurt deep inside. I’ve never been treated like that. Never.”

His daughter, Brandy Evans, shared the story on Facebook, and the community stepped up and showered Evans with unwavering support and love.

“My father is the strongest man I know but, as he told me what happened to him, I watched tears roll out of his eyes,” Brandy wrote on Facebook. “It hurt me to see him hurt like this, especially over something he cannot help.”

"It’s really made me proud to watch everybody rally around him and let him know that he doesn’t have to hide his battle scars,” Brandy said about the support her father received online.

The employee who told Evans to cover his face said they did so at the direction of management. “I had no choice! It was running my customers off," they wrote in the Facebook comments.

Another employee, Brandy Harley, was extremely upset about the way the company handled the situation and decided to resign. “This right here is my resignation. I’m fed up with this place," she said.

The owner of Forks Pit Stop did not respond to comment on the story.

As for Evans, he said that he is happy about all the care and love he received. "I’m telling you what, I didn’t know there were that many people out there that cared,” he said. “But there are. They’re out there. Everywhere.”
