'Affluenza' teen and mom had gun hidden in their room, Mexican hotel workers say

Ethan Couch and his mother reportedly brought a gun to the hotel where they were hiding in Mexico.

Staff at the Los Tules Resort told ABC News that the Couches were driving a black pick-up truck and had a large dog when they arrived on Dec. 19.

The Couches decided to extend their stay, but were forced to change rooms so that a disabled woman could have the ground floor room. The new occupants later notified the hotel that they had found a handgun in the nightstand. The guests wrapped the gun in a bathroom carpet and put it in a plastic bag, the staff said.

Ethan Couch picked up the gun the next day, but did not explain why he had the weapon, according to the hotel workers.

Cleaning staff said that they were unable to get into the Couches room on Dec. 24. When a manager entered the room the next day, the two had left without notifying the hotel.

Ethan Couch, who used "affluenza" as a defense after he killed four people while driving drunk, is being held in a Puerto Vallarta detention center. His mother, Tonya Couch, was deported back to the United States on Thursday.
