Each election people claim that this is somehow the most important election of our lives, but Sen. Al Franken admits that this election is perhaps "the most terrifying one of our lifetime."
In a Monday appearance on Conan O'Brien, the Minnesota senator admitted that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump really freaks him out. "I mean, this guy, Trump, you know, he just says one thing after another that makes you think that maybe he's not suited," he said laughing. "He went after the gold star family, the Khans," Franken said, recalling the father who held up the pocket Constitution and offered to let Trump borrow his. "And Trump tweeted 'What gives him the right to say I haven't read the Constitution?'" Franken shook his head while the audience laughed. "He's just amazing."
Franken quoted former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said that we needed to elect someone who is "sane and competent" to the high office. "That's such a low bar," Franken said. He then polled the audience to see how many of them thought they were sane and competent but then asked how many thought they were prepared to be president. There was far less applause for the latter. "I'm just saying, it's a low bar."
O'Brien has largely stayed out of politics but admitted that this election has really made him want to get back into it. Franken warned him that he can't do silly things like wiggle his ass, but O'Brien said that Trump has really thrown all of that out, allowing him to do things like hiss like a cat and other silly things. "There's no humor in politics," Franken said.
Franken encouraged people to get out and vote, "because it's scary."
He went on to emphasize that O'Brien is one of the longest serving late-night hosts on television today. "Do not for one second think that what you do is less important than what I do. Even though it is."
When it comes to humor in politics, Franken says that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton really does have a great sense of humor, calling her "goofy." But when it comes to Bill Clinton, Franken says he's not very funny at all. "She is the toughest, most experienced, hardest-working person I know," he said about Clinton.
