An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was sitting in the cockpit of an in-flight plane attempted to shut down the engines and had to be subdued, The Seattle Times reported Monday.
The flight was diverted to Portland where it landed safely.
“I’ll just give you a heads-up. We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit,” the pilot told Portland air traffic control in a voice recording. “It doesn’t seem like he’s causing any issue at the back. I think he’s subdued.”

“Other than that, we want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked,” the pilot says in the recording.
Alaska Airlines' parent company said in a statement that the captain of the aircraft and the first officer, "Quickly responded, engine power was not lost, and the crew secured the aircraft without incident.”
Alaska Airlines pilot Joe Emerson, 44, was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder and reckless endangerment.
