President Donald Trump addressed the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville again during his campaign rally on Tuesday in Phoenix -- but he mostly talked about it in relation to how purportedly unfair the media had been to him in its coverage of the incident.
A Fox News panel on the program Outnumbered called out Trump's speech for being wholly inappropriate given the current climate, and Republican strategist Gianno Caldwell said the president had completely misread the public's mood for this kind of fiery culture war speech that included a full-throated defense of Confederate monuments.
"This was not the right tone, tenor, or environment for this conversation," he said.
Fellow panelist Mercedes Schlapp shared Caldwell's assessment, said that Trump had failed during the rally to try to heal the nation and bring the country together.
"There’s moments in a presidency where you have to step back, where you have to take a pause, where you need to reevaluate and say, how can I heal this nation?" she asked.
And panelist Dagen McDowell slammed the president for talking about himself so much, when the real story was about the American people.
"He’s talking about unity, healing and love — but it was about him, and him defending himself against people who took issue with his repeated responses to the violence in Charlottesville," she said.
