“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Thursday ripped Ted Cruz over his new political ad against Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke—and offered his own jingle for the Republican congressman’s 2018 Senate campaign.
Following O’Rourke’s primary win on Wednesday, Cruz released a cringeworthy radio ad blasting O’Rourke for using the nickname “Beto” instead of his given name “Robert.” The problem? Cruz himself is really named Raphael “Ted” Cruz.
The hypocrisy was not lost on Colbert.
“You may not have heard of Beto O'Rourke, but no candidate gets voters more excited than ‘Not Ted Cruz,’” Colbert said during his opening monologue.
“Texas might be feeling the Beto-mentum, because so far this year, O'Rourke out-raised Ted Cruz by $1.5 million—and that has gotten Ted Cruz serious about this race,” Colbert continued. “So serious, he released a novelty song. Yeah, they don't call him ‘Weird Ted Cruz’ for nothing. They call him that because he's weird.”
After playing the song, Colbert rolled a clip of Cruz defending his attack on O’Rourke’s name during an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo.
“In terms of the jingle, some of it is just have a sense of humor,” Cruz told Cuomo Wednesday.
“Some of it is just have a since of humor,” Colbert repeated. “The rest of it is just awful."
“But the biggest crime of this song isn't the hypocrisy or the lyrics,” Colbert said. “It's in that first line: ‘If you're going to run in Texas you can't be a liberal, man 'cause liberal thought is not the spirit of a Lone Star man.’”
“You can't rhyme of a ‘Lone Star man’ with ‘man,’ you monster!” Colbert exclaimed. “What are you doing? Have you no shame.”
“In fact, I wrote a song with some advice for the Cruz campaign,” Colbert said, before launching into a jingle for the Republican senator.
