American Family Association director: Kill all the grizzly bears, and with them, their 'curse'

When it comes to polar bears, concern is raised about their possible extinction. (In fact, seven of the top eight sponsored links in Google's search have to do with saving the bears.)

But when it comes to grizzly bears, apparently, there isn't so much concern, at least not at the association dedicated to protecting American family values.

Take Bryan Fischer, Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association. On the Association's "Rightly Concerned," blog, he pens: "One human being is worth more than an infinite number of grizzly bears. Another way to put it is that there is no number of live grizzlies worth one dead human being. If it’s a choice between grizzlies and humans, the grizzlies have to go. And it’s time."

His blog post is titled, "A hot dog on two legs - time for open season on Yellowstone grizzlies."

Fischer wrote in response to a article published in the Los Angeles Times, "Grim outlook for grizzlies in Yellowstone region," which he said "oozes with sympathy."

The American Family Association director repeatedly "savages" the bears and mocks the LA Times reporter for bemoaning the fate of the animals, whose population is decreasing. In 2007, the bears were taken off the endangered species list, but their numbers are still scant.

Where the LA Times' writer pens, "With more bears and more people stuffed into the 22,000 square miles of bear habitat, something has to give, and no one here has a simple answer...”

...Fischer responds: "Of course there is a simple answer: shoot these man-eaters on sight."

And, as if attacking the bears wasn't enough, Fischer also suggests violence against federal judges.

"Maybe we could send a few of these 'nuisance' bears home with these federal judges and help them get their minds right about the mindless risk they are forcing on their fellow members of the human race," he writes.

He concludes, "God makes it clear in Scripture that deaths of people and livestock at the hands of savage beasts is a sign that the land is under a curse. The tragic thing here is that we are bringing this curse upon ourselves."

Fischer is a favorite of social conservative Republicans, and even spoke at the Values Voter summit this fall alongside Mitt Romney, Jim DeMint, and other big-name Republicans. Many also know him for having suggested that there should be "no more mosques, period" in the U.S. because "every single mosque is a potential terror training center or recruitment center for jihad."

But Fischer also has a history of outrage over animal attacks. He was furious that the killer whale Tilikum killed a trainer at SeaWorld Orlando in February, because it's just part of the "ongoing failure of the West to take counsel on practical matters from the Scripture."

"If the counsel of the Judeo-Christian tradition had been followed, Tillikum would have been put out of everyone's misery back in 1991 and would not have had the opportunity to claim two more human lives," he wrote at the time.

It's worthing noting, in the American Family Association's defense, that Fischer's blog post is followed by the statement: "opinions expressed are the author’s and do not necessarily reflect the views of the American Family Association or American Family Radio."
