New York lawmakers plan to strip Andrew Cuomo of emergency pandemic powers: report

On Tuesday, The Daily Beast reported that lawmakers in the New York state legislature are moving quickly to strip embattled Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) of his emergency pandemic powers.

"The emergency powers, which included broader powers to implement executive orders, were set to expire April 30, but Tuesday's bill will repeal them immediately," reported Blake Montgomery. Lawmakers reportedly hope to pass the bill swiftly, terminating the powers as soon as possible.

An expedited end to emergency powers has been in debate for over a week, following allegations from his own officials that the administration covered up statistics on COVID-19 deaths in long-term care facilities, in part out of fear that former President Donald Trump would use the numbers to attack him politically or even legally.

Cuomo has also been politically wounded by sexual harassment accusations from three former aides.
