Andrew McCabe is crowdfunding a legal defense fund as he prepares for fight against Trump administration

Former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe is crowdfunding a legal defense fund to respond to “a number of congressional inquiries,” a “broader Office of the Inspector General investigation” and “any potential lawsuits he may consider,” according to a GoFundMe campaign launched Thursday.

As BuzzFeed News reports, “a spokesperson for McCabe confirmed the authenticity” of the page, which hopes to raise $150,000 for McCabe’s legal defense. McCabe pledged he would not use the fund “for anything beyond his defense of the allegations against him.”

“He will continue to fight for the pension and benefits he deserves, rather than accept any crowdfunding for that purpose,” his GoFundMe reads.

McCabe was fired from the FBI by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a little over a day before he was set to retire and collect his full pension, citing a recommendation from the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

Donald Trump praised McCabe’s firing as “a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI” and “a great day for Democracy.”

McCabe maintains that his termination was politically motivated and part of an “ongoing assault” on the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
