Around $2,000 was thrown onto the Senate floor on Wednesday as protesters criticized lawmakers just before a procedural vote on a bill concerning genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Roll Call reported.
The disturbance, which was captured on C-SPAN's broadcast of the proceedings, and also posted online by Cloture Club, occurred around 4 p.m. local time.
The Senate is considering whether to proceed on a bill that would require companies to disclose any GMOs used in their products, while also letting them determine the method of disclosure. Critics of the bill say that it does not provide a stringent-enough definition of GMOs and lacks strict labeling standards.
The footage shows legislators standing on the floor as the money begins to rain down from the gallery. According to Roll Call, the protesters -- identified as Alexis Baden-Mayer and Adam Eidinger -- yelled "The Senate is being bribed" and "This is not what democracy looks like."
"When Congress moves to crush the will of 9 out of 10 Americans because they need companies like Monsanto to fund their campaigns, you know our democracy is in real trouble," Baden-Mayer said in a statement released by his organization, the Organic Consumers Association. "The corporate lobbyists are totally corrupt."
