A Kansas man has been indicted on hate crime charges for using a gun and hurling death threats and racial slurs in an effort to intimidate Black people, KAKE-TV reported.
Austin Schoemann allegedly threatened two Black juveniles who were trying to enter a convenience store back in July of 2022 and flashed a gun while using racial slurs. Prosecutors say he then used the gun to threaten a Black adult who intervened.
"The indictment further alleges that beginning in January 2022 and continuing through August 2022, Schoemann interfered with the federally-protected housing rights of a White woman, by making threats to hurt or kill any Black people who visited her Wellington home," KAKE-TV's report stated.
"Schoemann allegedly made many of these threats in person and would stand outside of the woman's house, shouting threats and racial slurs on occasions when he believed she had Black visitors in her house or planned to do so."
He's also charged in relation to using Facebook Messenger to send threats to the victims' family members.
He faces up to 10 years in prison for the firearms charges, up to five years for sending the Facebook messages and a mandatory minimum of seven years in prison for flashing the gun.
