Bachmann target gets extra protection following threat

Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin has been placed under police and federal protection after being threatened by a New Jersey man, Newser reports.

Abedin, the secretary of state's deputy chief of staff, had been accused by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) of infiltrating the U.S. government on behalf of radicals in the Muslim Brotherhood, with Bachmann further saying her family had ties to the organization.

Authorities said the individual, a Muslim, had been questioned by the New York Police Department and the State Department, but has not been charged.

While Bachmann's remarks have been condemned by both other lawmakers and her former campaign manager, the allegations might also have repercussions closer to home: Politico is reporting that the latest Democratic challenger for her House seat, Jim Graves, is in a dead heat with her in polls.

“It exemplifies all the things that Michele Bachmann epitomizes in Washington that’s not working,” Graves said of the incident. “Politics of division, fear-mongering, divisiveness, lack of civility, lack of facts and what have you. It’s not a question of if she’s going to do these things; it’s when.”
