Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) insisted during Sunday night's Democratic presidential debate that he was no friend of the National Rifle Association and would support stronger gun laws if elected president.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had accused Sanders of voting "with the NRA, with the gun lobby numerous times, he voted against the Brady bill five times." She said Sanders had voted in favor of the "Charleston loophole" and voted to allow gun manufactures to have immunity from civil liability lawsuits.
"I think that Secretary Clinton knows that what she says is very disingenuous," Sanders said. "I have a D minus voting record from the NRA."
Sanders said ever since he ran for Congress in 1988 he had opposed "selling military-style assault weapons" to civilians and supported universal background checks.
"I support what President Obama is doing in terms of trying to close the gun show loopholes and I think it should be a federal crime if people act as strawmen," he continued.
Sanders described the attack on a black church in Charleston as a "horrendous tragedy," and said efforts to stop such incidents "should not be a political issue."
